Another special evening…

The theme, Old World food and wine, clearly tickled our guests fancy. The evening was sold out the same day it was announced, and at 7.30pm last night guests arrived enthusiastic and ready to party! Tony Bell made exceptional work of the cuisine, and Peter Rowe was in full flow waxing lyrical about the wines. My favourite combination of the evening was the Gavi di Gavi with  Sea bream, salad of fennel, orange and walnut – so fresh and intense, truly wonderful. But really from start to finish we had so many high notes it seems pedantic to pick out a best. Well done Tony, and my thanks to Peter, our guest speaker. Wine-tasting dinner, 22nd September 2017

Vinha do Monte, Alentejo Branco 2015, Portugal, £10.99, £9.75 – aperitif

Citrus-coloured wine, with intense and elegant aromas where fresh pear, peach and white flowers stand out. Good volume and balance on the palate, with a lasting and fresh finish, characteristic of the white wines of Vidigueira. 70% Antão Vaz
20% Arinto/Pedernã 10% Roupeiro

Valdespino Fino Inocente, Jerez, Andalucia (37.5cl) Spain, £9.99, £8.75

Straw-yellow coloured. The aromas are delicate and complex, with notes of almonds and autolysis. On the palate it is savoury, with flavours of green apple, sea salt and toasty yeast. The barrel fermentation adds extra body and structure. Long and persistent. 100% Palomino

La Giustiniana Gavi di Gavi `Lugarara` 2016 Italy, £19.99, £17.75

Straw-yellow with a greenish hue. The wine’s aromas of white fruit, stone fruit and lime zest are immediately beguiling and followed by a subtle yet persistent bouquet of green apples. The palate is well balanced with a fresh acidity and good structure. Pleasant almond notes linger on the finish. 100% Cortese

Jean-Claude Boisset Macon-Igé, Burgundy 2015 France, £24.99, £22.00

Golden nuances in the glass. There is a nice complexity on the nose with aromas of ripe yellow fruits, citrus and white rose. The wine is clean and fresh on the palate with good acidity on the finish. 100% Chardonnay

Chateau de Pierreux Brouilly, Beaujolais Cru 2015, France, 17.99, £15.75

An intense purple colour with aromas of blackcurrant, redcurrant and blueberry. With sweet tannins, the palate is bursting with rich red fruit flavours and floral hints of iris and violet. 100% Gamay

Chateau Dufort-Vivens `Vivens` Margaux, Bordeaux 2012, France, £38.99, £34.00

Beautiful dark red colour with purple tints. The nose is very expressive, with intense aromas of cassis and blackberries, which are also noticeable in the mid-palate. Ample and round, the body is well structured with polished tannins and delicate layers of oak. Smoke, floral aromas and slight spicy notes rise after further airing of the wine. 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc

Coto De Imaz Rioja Gran Reserva 2010 Spain, £26.99, £23.75

The Gran Reserva has a brilliant ruby-red colour with tinges of brick red. Mature and elegant, the wine’s rich aromatic complexity is initially subtle, revealing itself more and more as the wine breathes. Toasted oak nuances and coconut give way to notes of leather and damp earth from bottle ageing. On the palate, silky, rounded tannins accompany fresh red berries, dried raisins and spicy notes. This is a complex wine with exceptional concentration and a long finish. 100% Tempranillo

Cantina Valpantena “Torre del Falasco” Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2014, Italy £16.99, £14.75

Aromas of dried cherry and dark plums are followed by hints of mocha and dark chocolate on the nose. A powerful, full-bodied palate opens with a spiced fruit character and supportive tannins. Raisin and candied peel notes come from the ‘ripasso’ method and are layered with rounded, ripe cherry flavours. The finish is long with added spicy nutmeg notes. 80% Corvina/Corvinone, 20% Rondinella

Sandeman LBV Port, Douro Valley, Portugal, £18.99, £15.00

Very deep ruby in colour. On the nose, intense and complex aromas emerge with notes of plum and blackberry, tobacco and cedar, a touch of mint, pepper and ginger and attractive hints of cocoa from oak ageing. A delightfully full-bodied wine, with evident but agreeable tannins, bright acidity, rich flavours and a long, harmonious finish. 40% Touriga Franca, 40% Touriga Nacional, 10% Tinta Roriz,

5% Tinto Cão, 5% Souzão
